Boston’s Chronic Tone Fuses Jazz & Hip-Hop On “Green in Blue” LP

Chronic Tone is a Boston-based producer and rapper who fell in love with jazz while taking music classes at Northeastern University.  While learning about the significance that Boston held during the great Jazz era, he was inspired to pay homage with a hip-hop project.

The result is “Green in Blue”.  A 10-track, entirely self-produced album that captures the essence and soul of Jazz but presents it in a hip-hop format.  Tone samples numerous jazz greats and makes it clear that John Coltrane is a personal favorite.

The title of the album is of course a tribute to the 1959 Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans collaboration “Blue in Green”.  But there’s more to it than that.

While on vacation in Iceland, Chronic Tone & his wife visited a place called Diamond Beach in Jökulsárlón, which features a glacial lagoon flowing out into the ocean.  While admiring the scenery, he couldn’t help but notice that the terrain consisted mainly of the colors green and blue.

He immediately shot a video for the album’s title track so he could capture the beautiful landscape.  Check it out here:
