A look back at all of Patrice Bergeron’s postseason overtime game-winners
Patrice Bergeron buried the Hurricanes in Game 1 on Wednesday afternoon with his fourth career overtime goal in the playoffs, passing Mel Hill and Terry O’Reilly for the most in Bruins history.
Here’s a look at all of Bergy’s OT game-winners:
4/9/04 – Game 2, first round vs. Canadiens, 2 OT
His first one came as an 18 year-old rookie. The B’s eventually lost their first round match-up with the Canadiens in seven games, but not before number 37 gave us this beautiful preview of what would become a legendary career:
After a few years off due to a multitude of road blocks (NHL lockout, B’s missing the postseason, dealing with injuries), Bergeron’s heroics continued in the 2010 playoffs when he racked up seven goals and four assists over 13 games. His contribution to the 2011 cup run was unforgettable, notching six goals and 14 assists throughout the four series’.
5/13/13 – Game 7, first round vs. Maple Leafs
Nine years after his first postseason overtime goal, Patrice Bergeron put a dagger through the hearts of the Toronto Maple Leafs in what was one of the greatest hockey games ever played:
6/5/13 – Game 3, Conference Finals vs. Penguins, 2 OT
Less than a month after the game-winner against Toronto, Bergy gave the B’s a commanding 3-0 lead over Pittsburgh in the Conference Finals with this goal in double overtime:
8/12/20 – Game 1, first round vs. Hurricanes, 2 OT
And of course Wednesday’s double OT thriller. Sixteen years later and not much has changed:
Tom Brady, David Ortiz, Paul Pierce, Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, Patrice Bergeron. There’s no doubt that he belongs in that discussion when it comes to clutch Boston athletes. The resume speaks for itself.
The Bruins will look to take a 2-0 series lead over Carolina on Thursday night. Puck drops at 8.
